Damien’s practice is articulated in the form of a constellation, which beyond the themes that he approaches (recently oriented on the development of identity within ominous context, liminal spaces where violence, affection and memory meet as well as questioning power dynamics between victims and oppressors), also tries to question how the audience perceives, understands and experiences the narrative devices that he puts in place. Behind the act of creation itself, the processes of collecting, assembling, and placing into situations appear to be essential in the development of structures where the audience is as much an observer as an actor in the establishment of a story. By its etymology, the concept of the constellation is explained as a group of stars which draws a figure on the celestial vault that the human imagination believes to recognize. This idea of creating connections between fragments to build other realities, but also mental and fictional worlds and meanings is at the heart of his artistic research.
The relationship between images and words has always been at the core of Damien's practice. The notion of storytelling and stage design, especially how they are interwoven with reality enlightens the action of archiving, using metaphors and analogies, interpreting and documenting memories as much as visions, dreams and projections in order to build up narratives. By the use of analogue and digital forms, the idea of framing, fragmenting, and distorting elements in order to reshape reality and create other meanings brings forward questions about truth while playing with mystery, blurriness or even surrealism.
Poetry in all its shapes is one of Damien's main interests and he tends to extend writing processes into visual practices that can be translated into videos, sets, texts and sculptures which exist together within books and installations. The idea of scenographic spaces, connected to performatives or cinematographic elements is linked with his fascination for the construction of stories and how they are communicated. Timelines and the way we can dismantle them are also important elements since making references to the past and imagining futures is where he finds a place to question topics such as archetypal forms/values, hierarchy, idols, powers and symbolism.
